Synopsis: Blue Exorcist follows Rin Okumura, a teenage boy who can’t seem to succeed at anything other than cooking and remaining jobless. Shortly after his introduction Rin finds out that his foster dad, a priest, doubles as a bad ass exorcist… and himself? Well he is the son of Satan, the most powerful of all demons. Title: Blue Exorcist aka Ao no Exorcist
Series: 25 episodes
By: Madman Entertainment
Date: April 2011 – October 2011
This show closely follows the typical shonen plot guidelines. Boy has crazy powers that hes never known about. Boy is an outcast because of his powers. Boy wields his crazy powers for the greater good. Yea, we’ve seen it all before. What sets Blue Exorcist apart however, is not the fact that its unique but that its well written, character driven, beautifully animated and just … well … entertaining.
You are already attached to the show’s characters after the second episode, enough to make you want to keep watching. If you are not use to the whole shonen formula, then by the second episode, you are hooked. The show is also genuinely funny. You will have a few laugh out loud moments, and they manage to balance these moments quite well with their emotional or action packed counterparts. The only other anime i can think of that seamlessly balances humor and action the way this series does, is One Piece.
Overall, I definitely recommend this series, especially to anyone just getting their feet wet in the anime world. If you aren’t use to the way shonen does things then you would notice this shows biggest weak point, its ‘by the book’ plot. If you are a seasoned anime lover, then this story might feel a bit stale. But there is a good chance that the well developed characters, quality humor and impressive animation will win you over.Tags: Action, Dark, Drama, Fantasy
